by trekschuit (boat) and someone yelled he was the heir. When he received the Fraeylemaborg
estate in Slochteren in 1867, he added "van Slochteren" to his last name. The house is now a museum.

"Thomassen was part of their last name, and perhaps the reason why the dog was named "Tommie".

"2e moeder van CBWG". Echtegenote van Johannes Guijkens-Wilkens, 1ste of 2e"

(Second mother to CBWG. Wife of Johannes Guijkens Wilkes, 1ste or 2nd wife"

As Johannes' first wife passed away before the image was taken, the sitter can be identified as his second wife.

Maria Hendrika Wilkes (1793-?) was 73 years old in the image here. She was the daughter of a pen maker, who made pens out of the feathers of birds (ostriches, turkeys, ducks, ravens, swans but mostly geese). Maria married Johannes Guijkens (1800-1850), supplier of books to the Royal Court, so books and papers were in the family. They lived in Amsterdam.

Johannes had previously been married to her sister, Alida Wilhelmina Wilkes, who passed away 8 years before the marriage of Johannes and Maria in 1848. Sadly Johannes died 2 years into their marriage.

With her sister Alida, Johannes had a son called Christiaan Barend Willem Guijkens (CBWG). He in turn had a son, Pieter Rudolph, who became technical assistant at the patent council. Pieter's son, again named Christiaan Barend Willem, was a carpenter and during the 2nd World War he was shot for spying and sabotage. His father died a month before he did.
