When first, dear girl, I viewed that calm, fair face
Radiant with beauty, youth and innocence
One little smile upon thy lips there played
So sweetly that I wished it ne’er might fade
But on that blessed shrine, perpetual be
And ever beam unceasingly on me.
But no! there needs a better world than this
So dwell for ever in unshaded bliss
On earth, each joy is followed by a tear.
No endless sunshine lights our pathway here
Still o’er thy cheek that smile of hope shall cast
Its brightness when the sorrow - cloud has passed
And when those fond ones who have loved thee best
Shall leave this earth to seek their heavenly rest
Thy gentle mission thou shalt then fulfil
And shed that smile o’er those who love thee still
Whilst earthly beauty fading year by year
Shall make thy soul more beautiful appear
And life this passed in charity and love
That smile shale light thee to the realms above
